Elsfleth, Hunte 5 August 2012

Where the river Hunte meets the river Weser Elsfleth was founded around the 9th century. It was a place for shipbuilding and shipping companies. Its decline came with the upcoming of steam navigation and steel hulls.
Now Elsfleth still hosts a nautical college. We are visiting Elsfleth quite regularly with our own sailing boat and enjoy the "small escapes".
The German weather forecast is not as good as it used to be. For this weekend they predicted thunderstorms and heavy rain. And we canceled our planned trip and just only visited Elsfleth. As you can see with no thunderstorm but with sunshine and some clouds. I think next time I will not even take a look at the weather forecast.

Emma am See 2012

Emma am See 2012, originally uploaded by manfred schloesser.

This garden restaurant got a complete renewal in 2010. The name refers to Count Emma. The legend reports that she gave the 500 acre to the citizens of Bremen in 1032.
Now you can sit and sip your wine in the Buegerpark and enjoy the garden atmosphere. The Buergerpark is an English garden and open for free public access. We love to visit this place which is in walking distance from our home.

Sophie´s choice at Port Piet Bremen

Sophie´s choice at Port Piet Bremen

Sophie is the waitress on the right working at Port Piet. This place is a Biergarten located at the former harbor where the turf was discharged til the beginning of the 20th century (Torfhafen in Findorff). Today you can enjoy your beer, your flammkuchen and hide from the blazing sun. What looks like a tortured pizza in the front is a flammkuchen. And the beer to the right is non-alcoholic Weizen Beer.
And here my special greetings to the two women and the two couples sitting on the right and left. And Sophie of course.
In Biergarten in Germany it is quite common to join a group of complete strangers. That can become quite interesting.
And yes, there is a real bicycle in the tree.
